Wu Hongbo, Former Under-Secretary-General of United Nations, advocate to promote the construction of Shiology science system

The 4th World Shiology Forum was held in Haikou, China on October 10, 2023, attracting politicians, experts, scholars and practitioners from all over the world. The purpose of the forum is to discuss the challenges faced by human beings in the process of food acquisition and utilization, and to explore holistic solutions. At the opening ceremony, Wu Hongbo, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, delivered a keynote speech entitled “Sustainable Development and Shiology Theory”, emphasizing the importance of the overall cognition of human “eat+food” and the necessity of building a Shiology Science system.

First, Mr. Wu Hongbo extended a warm welcome to the guests and expressed his pleasure that the Forum has become an international platform to gather experts, scholars and practitioners to discuss the emerging discipline - Shiology.

In his speech, Mr. Wu Hongbo shared two enlightening stories. Through the experience of the milk production problem in China in 2008 and the visit of a provincial governor to Germany in 2011 to learn about food safety, he stressed the need for holistic awareness and comprehensive management in the “eat+food” industry. "It's hard to avoid problems with an isolated and fragmented management," he said.

Then, Mr. Wu Hongbo reviewed the history of human understanding of sustainable development, from the concept of sustainable development proposed in 1972 to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by the United Nations in 2015. He stressed that genuine sustainable development required substantial progress in all three areas: economic, society and environment.

According to the knowledge system of Shiology, Mr. Wu Hongbo introduced the acquaintance experience with Mr. Liu Guangwei, the founder of Shiology Theory. He praised the originality, wholeness and globality of the Shiology Knowledge System. Shiology is a public product addressing human “eat+food” issues.

At the end of the speech, Mr. Wu Hongbo encouraged the participants to actively participate in the discussion and jointly explore how to accelerate the construction of the shiology science system; promote the establishment of an international standard system for shiology; build a global digital platform for “eat+food” affairs; and actively conduct shiology general education, and wished this forum a complete success.
