The Deputy Minister of Health of Turkey Attended the Turkey Forum of the 3rd World Eatology Forum

The World Eatology Forum virtually held a branch forum Eatology: Holistically Solve Food Issues with a Multidisciplinary Approach as its annual meeting in corporation with Istanbul Medipol University December 18-19, 2020. Last year, the World Eatology Forum had its annual meeting endorsed by the 2019 G20 Osaka summit to take place in Japan as the summit’s official side event. This is allegedly a milestone for this Beijing-based NGO having been focusing its efforts on researching and addressing global food issues with the application of eatology, an emerging science initiated by the founder of the WEF Guangwei Liu.
The virtual meeting, framed as the Turkey Forum of the World Eatology Forum with the aim of introducing eatology into Turkey, attracted keynote speakers Sabahattin Aydın, Deputy Minister of of Health of Turkey, Zhu Juwang, Director of the Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government/DESA of the United Nations, Peter Klosse, founder of the Academy of Scientific Taste Evaluation in the Netherlands, and over 30 local scholars, KOLs, and entrepreneurs in Turkey. Guangwei Liu also made a keynote speech.


The theme of the forum is Eatology: Holistically Solve Food Issues with a Multidisciplinary Approach.

The World Eatology Forum meant this virtual meeting to solve food issues in Turkey. Since late 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has posed a major threat to the sustainable development of human societies, bringing unprecedented pressure to global food systems. In 2021, the first Food Systems Summit will be convened by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres with the goal of mobilizing global forces to initiate bold reforms in global food systems to make them healthier, more sustainable, and fairer. This grand scheme signifies a consensus reached in the international community on two things: First, food problems are fundamental in hindering the sustainable development of mankind; second, the solution of food problems requires holistic perception and governance.

Eatology was initiated as a scientific framework by Guangwei Liu to integrate all human knowledge about food and have them classified and organised into a tiered system called “the 3-13-36 system”. "3" refers to the three major categories under which all collected food issues are organised, namely food production, food utilization, and food order (tier-2 subjects). "13" refers to the 13 paradigms (tier-3 subjects) underpinning the three categories. "36" refers to the tier-4 subjects subordinate to the 13 paradigms, including food matrix protection science, food matrix restoration science, food picking science, food hunting science, food fishing science, food harvesting science, food planting science, food farming science, food culturing science, synthetic foods as flavors science, synthetic foods as tonifiers science, food disintegration science, food cooking science, food fermentation science, food storage science, food transport science, food packaging science, eation non-power tools science, eation power tools science, food natures science, food components science, eaters' physiological signs science, eaters' physiological structures science, eating methodology science, dining aesthetics science, eation diseases science, eaing therapeutics with foods of imbalanced nature science, eating therapeutics with synthetic foods science, eatance economic science, eation laws science, eatance administration science, eatance digital control science, eatology education science, eation conventions science, food obtaining history science, and food domestication history science.

The 3-13-36 system, i.e. the taxonomy of academic subjects of eatology, is being presented.

Accroding to eatology, all the above outgrowths of cognition have been included into an umbrella concept “eatance”, hence a new perspective formed “eatance issue”. Eatance issue can be seen as an upgrade of food issue in common parlance, representing a brand new ideology characteristic of holistic perception, systematic thinking, and integrated governance about food issues. Besides, within the framework of eatology, conceptually, "food" has been expanded to include oral medication and anything that is consumed to maintain survival and health. Eatology has three missions. The first mission is to extend the average life expectancy of human beings in light of the fact that our current average life expectancy has been far from reaching the theoretically maximum lifespan of mammals. The second mission is to optimize world order by properly addressing various social conflicts caused by eatances. The third mission is to ensure the continuity of human species in view of the probable failure of the model of industrial civilization to achieve sustainable development.

In terms of target area, analytical perspective, and mission, eatology are all highly consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations in 2015. In this sense, the World Eatology Forum was invited to be present at an expert group meeting of the United Nations titled Addressing Emerging Requirements and Challenges for Policy and Decision-Making in Digital Transformation in Developing Countries in late 2019, where the founder of the WEF Guangwei Liu presented the initiative “Constructing a Digital Eatance Platform” to great acclaim.

The Turkey Forum centered its discussions about nutrition spanning seven sessions “Nutrition Approaches from Past to Present,” “Sustainable Healthy Nutrition,” “Factors Affecting Nutrition,” “The Place and Importance of Foods in Nutrition,” “Food Technology and Food Preparation,” “Nutrition and Ecology - Environmental Awareness,” and “Nutrition Practice in Turkey,” in two days. Evidence-based and scientifically sound suggestions were expected to be proposed through such brainstorming as to building healthier, more resilient, and more sustainable food systems for Turkey. As a conclusive act of the forum, the Istanbul Declaration of Eatology was released to publicise a consensus reached among all participants on five propositions:

1. COVID-19 is a conflict between humans and the ecology, not an internal conflict among human beings. Only through global cooperation can it be completely overcome.
2. The SDGs will be undeliverable without effective solutions found to eatance issues.
3. History has repeatedly proved that eatance issues haven’t been resolved with a compartmentalised methodology. Instead, holism is the ultimate answer to the conundrums.
4. The construction of the Internet of Eatances (SEB-TR) will be an effective way to solve Turkish eatance issues.
5. The World Healthy Dietary Guide 2.0 is recommended to each member of the international community for the sake of a healthier and longer life.

Geographically, China and Turkey are located at the start and end of the Silk Road respectively, sharing its glorious historical and cultural heritage. The two countries have been closely cooperating on economy, trade, and culture. China’s “Belt and Road Initiative” and Turkey’s “Middle Corridor” can benefit and complement each other for a brighter future. The Turkey Forum of the 3rd World Eatology Forum is the first academic exchange between China and Turkey focusing on eatology. The forum can be a long-standing platform on which the two countries share research results, solve eatance issues, and promote the implementation of the SDGs. The forum is a concrete manifestation of non-governmental forces from China and Turkey in taking actions to jointly respond to the challenges set by COVID-19.
